April showers and May flowers both signal the arrival of spring, but with them also comes the headaches, sniffles and itchy throat that can make the new season an irritating one. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, approximately 50 million Americans are affected by allergies, as much as 30 percent of the adult population. With so many people sniffling and sneezing, we thought it would be a good idea to talk about some all-natural allergy remedies you can rely on to actually enjoy the outdoors this spring.
Eucalyptus is definitely one of the most distinct essential oils, but if you like the scent, it’s easily one of the best for clearing blocked passageways and giving you allergy relief. At the spa, we often use eucalyptus in our steam room to help our clients breathe easy. Try it at home by filling the sink with hot water and adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil. Then, either soak a washcloth in the water and lay it over your face, or bend over the sink and cover your head with a towel to breathe in the vapors and give your skin a luxurious steam.
Peppermint is a serious phlegm fighter! Did you know that a study by The Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that peppermint oil has an antispasmodic effect on the windpipe muscles which can ease pesky coughs? If eucalyptus is a bit too strong for your liking, peppermint oil contains many of the same anti-congestive properties with a milder scent that will also calm the mind.
Lemon is a natural antibacterial which is why you see it in so many cleaning products. Lemon oil works wonders against nasal mucus as well as throat and mouth inflammation. Try a lemon based nasal spray for all natural relief from perennial sniffling and keep the house pollen and pet dander-free with a lemon oil and water cleaning solution.
Oregano oil takes some getting used to but it’s a well-documented remedy for treating respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, colds, and flu. A few drops under the tongue in the morning can help the body naturally fight off allergy symptoms as it also works as a powerful all natural immune system booster. If you can get used to the taste, you’ll really feel a difference!
Studies have shown that frankincense is a reliable expectorant, decongestant, and anti-inflammatory tool that can help unblock sinuses and clear bronchial irritation. Frankincense has also been used to reduce the risk of asthma.
Using chamomile can help to aid blocked passageways as well as soothe any dry, itchy skin conditions. Add a few drops to your diffuser to breathe easier, or apply a topical agent to aid pesky skin conditions. A hot cup of tea can also help to relax that irritated throat.
If you’re surviving during the day but struggling at night, lavender is a natural antihistamine and works perfectly to help soothe you to sleep. If you find yourself coughing and wheezing during the night, a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow should calm both your allergy symptoms and your mind.
