Prep Your Skin for Autumn in Three Simple Steps

While we’re still enjoying amazing weather here in NYC, the cooler temperatures are coming and it’s time to get prepared. Summer is a tough season on the skin – the heat zaps much-needed moisture, sunscreen clogs our pores, and the sun does one heck of a job in the damage department. So as we begin to transition to autumn, it’s the perfect time to rehydrate and brighten the face with a few tricks of the trade and some smart product integrations.

Exfoliate

According to Body by Brooklyn facialist Marlene Melendez, getting rid of dead skin cell buildup is vital this time of year. “In the summer, we are stifling in the subway one minute and then freezing in an air-conditioned office the next. These extreme temperature changes make the skin work harder to regulate its oil balance which makes it much easier for the pores to get clogged. In order to give our complexion back its glow, we have to get rid of all that build-up and allow fresh new cells to come to the surface.”

Marlene recommends upping your exfoliation routine to twice or three times per week. “The key is to not scrub hard but to use gentle, circular motions with an active exfoliator such as charcoal or almond for sensitive skin. Move around the entire face and neck slowly for two to three minutes and then rinse thoroughly with warm water. Always finish with a hydrator to make sure that those new skin cells are nourished.”

Treat

Once the dead skin cells are gone, it’s time to treat sun spots or dark pigmentation brought on from too much time in the sun. For this, Marlene recommends Vitamin C. “Vitamin C is an amazing skin healer and works to make the complexion look brighter and more vibrant while reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. Marlene’s final tip is to add a humidifier to your bedroom when you’re sleeping at night. “A lot of people live in apartments where the heat is controlled centrally. If your building likes to crank it up when the cold weather comes, that heat is going to be extremely drying. Keeping a humidifier running will add moisture to the air which will help your skin stay soft and vibrant as we transition into the colder months.”
