Weekends are made for winding down, relaxing and enjoying time with friends and family. But some quality “me time” can also be a great way to rejuvenate the mind, body and soul. A yoga class, a walk or run in the park or curling up with a good book and a cup of tea are some perennial favorites, but here at Body by Brooklyn, we can’t go past a luxurious at-home facial ritual to ease tension and give the skin a gorgeous glow. Here’s how:
Start off with a good, thorough cleansing of the skin with your favorite product. A cleanser should never make your skin feel dry after a wash, so if you have that “squeaky clean” feeling, you might not have the right product for your skin type. After a comprehensive wash, your skin should feel clean, but still hydrated.
After a good cleanse, it’s time to get rid of those dead skin cells. We love a good scrub, especially one with granules that help to slough off old skin and bring new, fresh cells to the surface. One of our top picks is the Glo Professional Pumpkin Enzyme Scrub, but you can even make one at home using ingredients from the pantry.
Once you’ve rinsed the scrub from your face, it’s time to apply a mask. You might not realize that skin is a living organ that needs air to breathe. When you cover the skin in a mask, it starts working really hard to find air, pushing impurities to the surface in the process. There are many types of masks from clay to mud to gel-based moisture masks, and the type you use depends on your skin type. Our favorite all-rounder is the Cucumber Recovery Mask, which is gentle enough for most skin types and has a boosting hydration element to plump to skin and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. After your mask has dried (which takes 10-20 minutes) you can remove it using a warm, wet washcloth.
Now that the dead skin cells are gone and you’re fresh-faced, it’s time to pump the hydration back into your complexion. This is where toner comes in. Toner is a key element in skin care because unlike moisturizer it actually has the ability to deliver water directly into the skin. We love the Body by Brooklyn Rose Water Toner Mist, which leaves the face healthy and hydrated. Whatever you do, don’t skip this step! If your skin is properly hydrated on a daily basis, most of your other skin care concerns will likely disappear.
Finally, lock in all the goodness you’ve just put into your skin with your favorite moisturizer. This final step protects your face and décolleté from the outside elements while ensuring that the nourishment stays put. And don’t forget the sunscreen; even on cloudy days, those pesky rays have the ability to do damage to your skin.
