Can you believe it’s almost Halloween? To celebrate we’ve taken aim at some of the biggest skincare misconceptions to show you the tricks to avoid and the treats to help you look and feel beautiful. Get ready for a fright!

Myth. Using a tanning bed is safer than lying in the sun.

Truth. We don’t care how you’re getting those rays, subjecting your skin to ultraviolet radiation is one of the easiest ways to end up with skin cancer. Many young women rely on tanning beds to keep that summer glow all year long, but dermatologists, aestheticians, and skin care experts all agree that beds are just as harmful as the natural sun. Do yourself a favor and stick to the self-tanner or better yet, embrace your natural skin tone!

Myth. Oil-based products will make your skin break out.

Truth. Our skin works very hard to achieve the right balance of oil and water, and when it’s out of whack a breakout will usually occur. Stripping the skin of its natural oil will undoubtedly lead to pimples, and contrary to popular belief, adding a hydrating oil to your skin care routine can help it to maintain the balance that it’s looking for.

Myth. You can shrink your pores.

Truth. Unfortunately, pore size is genetically inherited, which means you’re stuck with what you’ve got. The good news is that clean pores will appear significantly smaller than clogged pores. Enlist an expert aesthetician at a local spa to perform a monthly facial with extractions in order to remove all the dirt, oil and dead cells that are trapped in your skin and you’ll enjoy a happier, healthier complexion.

Myth. You’ll get dark circles if you don’t sleep enough.

Truth. This isn’t necessarily true since dark circles generally come from permanent physical traits such as darker pigmentation, deep-set sockets, and veins under the eyes. However, a lack of sleep can make those attributes look more prominent, especially when paired with bad eating habits and consistent exposure to the sun. To combat dark circles, add an eye cream that’s rich in peptides and hyaluronic acid to your skincare routine. These ingredients will keep the area hydrated which will make the skin appear plumper and less weary.

Myth. Wearing makeup everyday suffocates the skin.

Truth. Sure, lots of women think that taking a break from makeup will help them restore their skin’s health. The truth is that makeup doesn’t really bother the skin unless it’s left on all the time. The skin is a living, breathing organ so removing anything that can clog the pores is essential. As long you’re taking your makeup off before bed, that should give you plenty of downtime for it to maintain its healthy balance.
